The Pius Institute
A Catholic apostolate dedicated to the catechesis and continued conversion of the faithful
Laudetur Iesus Christus! The Pius Institute is a nonprofit organization dedicated to the continued conversion and thorough catechesis of Catholics, people interested in converting to Catholicism, and people who just want to learn more about the Church. We also provide educational and practical resources for Catholics who want to find a faithful Catholic community, reconcile difficulties with understanding Catholic teachings on a wide array of topics, and better understand their faith; we advocate for the defenseless unborn through promoting a culture of life and by sharing the horrifying truth about the abortion industry; and we advocate for liturgical reverence and love of tradition in the celebration of the Novus Ordo Missæ.
We promote a culture of orthodoxy (little “o”). We explore the implications of orthodoxy and adherence to tradition; understanding why the Church holds certain teachings is vital to understanding the fact that every Catholic doctrine is based in well-founded rationale. It is both helpful and vindicating to discover that Catholicism is, at its core, an intensely academic belief system. The history of intellectualism in the community of Church fathers bolsters the Church’s claims, as well as Her approach to understanding them in a profound way. As such, tradition is an immensely important thing; so much so that our motto is A veteri nova venire necesse est. This translates to “from the old, the new must come.”
The Pius Institute strongly advocates for reverence in the liturgy; we believe that a reverent celebration of the Holy Mass is vital to understanding the true gravity of what happens at the altar. We offer links to two resources to help you find a mass that is celebrated reverently. In our navigation menu, simply navigate to Resources > Find a Liturgy, and you will find links to two directories – one for traditional Latin Masses near you, and one for user-recommended Novus Ordo liturgies that are celebrated with reverence and respect due to our Lord when we attend the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass. You will also find a page where we explain what to avoid when looking for a liturgy that exercises proper reverence. On this page, you will also find information for how to identify churches that are not in communion with Rome (especially important for finding a Latin mass, as many churches who celebrate the Tridentine liturgy are part of schismatic groups, which will not fulfill your Sunday obligation). Attendance at liturgies that are celebrated illicitly may also potentially constitute grave sin. For more information on what makes a liturgy reverent, please visit the page on our website where we outline criteria for liturgical reverence in the new rite.
